Greensborough (Melbourne, Victoria)

Steve started his Karate journey in 1972 with Zen Do Kai, a Gojukai based style. An element that was instilled early in his training was the importance of developing a strong spirit, training in techniques will work in the real world and learn from everything around you.

Over the years, time has afforded him opportunities to cross train in a variety of areas including, Kickboxing, BJJ, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai. Steve has trained with a variety of different instructors and backgrounds and has travelled extensively including Okinawa, France, Italy, England, Thailand, and New Zealand.

Steve has over 40 years of experience as an instructor with roles in organisational and curriculum development, technical advisory, mentorship and has been in involved with Governmental Statutory Bodies in regulating martial arts and combat sports.

Steve has also featured Blitz (Australasian martial arts magazine), including Front Covers and awarded 'Instructor of the Year' in 1996 by Blitz Magazine.

The major passion has always been around Kata, in better understand the meaning, the applications, the how's, the why's, the context and the history.

Without a doubt, Taira Sensei and his brand of Gojuryu has been a bridge in the translation of traditional Karate, Kata and combat/self-defence. With the 'universality' of his methods, many answers can be found.

Steve continues to teach, travel and train (particularly anywhere where Taira Sensei is going!) and his classes provide a great opportunity for not only anyone wanting to commence a lifetime journey, but for the serious martial artist wishing to improve their skills and gain a deeper understanding.

Steve achieved his 6th dan with Taira sensei on the Gold Coast in 2017.
