Damien has been training in the martial arts since 1982, initially training in Judo and then commencing Karate in 1984. He is currently a 5th dan in Okinawan Goju Ryu. Over the past 30+ years he has extended his interest in and explored the history and practices of a variety of martial arts; modern and traditional. He has been a martial arts teacher for over 25 years now and is the Kaicho of a multi-disciplinary Dojo on the Gold Coast.
Damien worked in the security industry for 18 years where he was constantly exposed to some of the seedier and more violent characters in our society; an environment where techniques, tactics and training methods had to work! He has been lucky enough to travel the world with his work and has trained extensively in the US and the UK; and more importantly, with Taira Sensei in Okinawa, the birthplace of karate.
Hannah is a passionate and dedicated martial artist having continually trained in both Karate and Muay Thai since she commenced training in 1992. She is currently a 4th dan in Goju Ryu and a 4th khan in Muay Thai. Hannah also has extensive real world experience with over 18 years of security industry experience behind her.
The pair run a full time Dojo, the Southern Cross Martial Arts Centre, on the Gold Coast and are the senior instructors of the non-profit Southern Cross Martial Arts Association Inc.
Damien and Hannah have trained together and taught karate together for over 20 years and are both immersed in the continued study of the Goju Ryu kata and their bunkai applications. To this end they bring Taira Sensei (9th dan Okinawa Goju Ryu, Hanshi) to their Dojo for seminars every year, as well as going to train in Okinawa with him annually. For them and their students, it's all about the training.
